Firstly, it’s pretty clear that all the Avatars are separate people, separate identities, separate spirits, even. The Avatar is the vessel of the Avatar Spirit.
It is not, as soliloquize put it, “IMMORTALITY IN SMALL CHUNKS.”
KORRA IS NOT AANG.
AANG WAS NOT ROKU.
NONE OF THEM ARE KYOSHI, KURUK, YANGCHEN.
EVERY time I see one of these posts giggle-snerking about how Korra would mock Tenzin for having banged his mom in a past life, or any other kind of awkward-making comment based off this idea…
what the fuck is wrong with you? why is that kind of disrespect in any way tolerable? (I’ve found Korra’s disrespect for Tenzin so problematic on SO many levels, and not even because I respect authority as a given. Somehow fandom thinks even more disrespect is cool? Um ok.)
Secondly, and I’m not going to explain this well, it feels incredibly disrespectful of religions in which reincarnation is part of the system. Not all reincarnation is a case of a person picking up from where their last life left off.
It’s bad enough that the writing of LOK has proven that REFERRING BACK TO HISTORY is a lost art for Korra. Watching the fandom REFER BACK TO HISTORY …. for snerks and giggles and the tee-hee of warped-up relationships (OMG KORRA IS TENZIN’S DAD! no, no she’s not. She’s Korra, and the new Avatar. Tenzin was the last Avatar’s son, not the new Avatar’s son) smacks of intense disrespect and stereotyping of how reincarnation works.
And no I do not feel like explaining to you how reincarnation works in the folk religion I grew up with. If you couldn’t understand it from TLA already, you probably won’t bother reading what I can’t explain succinctly.
