i get amused everytime I see a mention of “ramen” across my dash, because that’s only ONE brand of instant noodle, which everybody is talking about anyway.

it’s like when people substitute the word “Kleenex” for tissue paper.

my dad used to be very particular about this sort of thing. when I was growing up instant noodles were “Maggi”- everybody said it. But not my dad. He’d always correct us, “INSTANT NOODLES. Don’t say Maggi unless you’re actually talking about Maggi.” (but my dad was also in the flavour industry, so he was pretty invested in making sure people were accurate about that sort of thing.)

There’s a brand called ramen?

I assumed they were just

talking about

ramen.

Yeah! I know I’ve seen it before. Not recently, but that is what I think of when I think of ramen (outside of Japanese contexts anyway). But even if people do mean “ramen” (small letter ramen) after a bit I gather that they’re just talking about “instant noodles”, not actual ramen!

i probably should have picked up on that before now :D:

yeah i’m used to them being called instant noodles or three minute noodles (though i suspect the latter was a Maggi branding thing)

actually that’s a lie i usually hear “mi goreng”, but that’s because mi goreng are specifically the kind of instant noodles that are popular amongst my social group :V

Hahaha, 3? I thought Maggi brands itself as TWO-minute noodles! Which is a damnable lie.

omg mi goreng as another substitute for instant noodle (a particular kind of instant noodle but still) is another of those things. when i tell my dad “hey Dad I want some Mamee noodles” he always goes “SOUP OR DRY? PLS SPECIFY” and I end up specifying brands and what KIND as a result.

OH HAHA IT IS YES i’d forgotten

my mum insisted on calling them three minute noodles because “they don’t take two minutes”

what a nerd :D

they really don’t though! Well, they do if you’re cooking them the, uh, intended way, which is with a pot on a stove and shit. Then yes, it takes two minutes for the noodles to get to that cooked state (in which they are slightly transparent).

But Maggi, it takes my microwave ~4 minutes. 2 and a half for the first bit, then I take them out and stir the noodles a bit (flip the cake over, really) and put it in for another one and a half minutes.
