Not the internet’s. Just saying.
Yeah, pretty much.
Not the internet’s. Just saying.
Yeah, pretty much.
I’m just - I’m not even “laugh so you don’t cry” on this, I am horrified. I can barely even read it.
This is a sign that the programming team — not some unrelated pinheads, but the five or six people who are supposed to be writing the code — have put strong, usable code last on their priorities. It comes behind marketing, behind ideology, and behind absurd identity politics.
My identity and dignity as a human being is less important than code.
That is, literally, what they just said.
I am less important than a bunch of bits on a computer somewhere.
Their ability to feed me gender-stereotyped pieces of impersonal advertising is more important than my need for a place where I can be honest and comfortable about who I am.
I don’t have any way to respond to this. I am floored.
Sadly, the FOSS community is just filled to the brim with people like this. I mean, this is what happens when a bunch of privilege-denying dudes start a political movement fighting against the horrible oppression of… having to use proprietary software sometimes.
I mean. I like FOSS. But I haven’t been part of “the community” for years, precisely because of shit like this.
Though, as I said on Twitter, it’s pretty amusing (in a “laugh so you don’t cry” way) to see the contortions people will put themselves through to avoid showing themselves the bigots they clearly are.
One of the most fucked up things about this post I want to ask the author is… how the fuck does this matter to you? How fucking self-centered do you have to be to imagine that gender being a text field could ever be fucking relevant to you? What’s the purpose of having gender as a hard linguistic term besides to categorize people needlessly, often without their permission or input on how they want to identify?
What is this bullshit about this sort of open-field formation making it hard for other software code developers in the future? If you wanted an easy fucking job of coding, wouldn’t you just go work for a place which has such strictures in place? Isn’t the fucking point of Diaspora to open up and create freedoms that wouldn’t necessarily be found on Facebook? Which includes being forced to identify as a gender they don’t feel is a label that belongs to them?
So fucking what if everything is a text field? What is the fucking definition of usability when certain fields aren’t usable for people anyway, except to box us up and open us to judgement? Maybe I do want my birthday to be in a text field that I can write whatever I damn well want in it. Maybe I don’t want my birthday to be announced to people - because you know what? IF THEY REALLY GAVE A SHIT THEY COULD, I DON’T KNOW, ASK. Isn’t that one of the problems with Facebook? The fact that it volunteers (or voluntells you to input) information with others that you may not want to share? So what’s wrong with a feature that makes other people put a bit of fucking work in understanding you on your own terms?
There’s meaningful information… and there’re meaningful principles. I can get meaningful information by asking and communicating. The latter is a bit harder to find.
Code monkey whiner can go suck it.
Or as the Dutch say, there are communists in my funhouse.
bahahahhahahahhahahhahahahahhahaha
The Danish say that :3
The Dutch say: “The tomato soup is overcooked”
The Flemish (part of Belgium) say: “The Russians are in the land”, which is half as awesome as the Danish version…
I do like the South African one: “Granny’s stuck in traffic” xD
Uhm…. we say what?
Reality: Danes don’t actually say that… except for those who still think we live in the 70s or something.
Whichever group says that, it is still an awesome expression.
I miss having communists in my funhouse.
Informal poll, I’m curious. Please re-blog with the perfume you wear, if any. I use Lolita Lempicka in the original purple bottle and this year started mixing it up with Lola by Marc Jacobs. For awhile I favored Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, but I don’t think it suits me anymore.
I know this will reflect poorly on me, but I have, at least, 30+ different perfumes. From Dolce & Gabbana to Gucci(s) to Burberry, to Dior(s) and everything in between. My favorites, though, happen to be the fragrances I cannot buy where I live. Stuff that comes from this perfumist, which can only be bought in the Arab Gulf Region. It took me a long time to learn that my favorite fragrance happens to be for men. Who cares, I’ve been complimented on it more times than I care to remember so I must be doing it right.
For the longest time, Davidoff’s “Water” for women. Then I saved up enough Shoppers’ Optimum pointed to get Jennifer Lopez’s “Lux”. I haven’t worn perfume in so long though. Lots of places in Canada are scent-free and I rather like that.
Currently, the local (Conservative) MP in London, Ontario is running a poll on his website asking the following question:
“Should Parliament support the NDP MP’s Bill to amend the Canadian Human Right Act to add gender identity and gender expression as grounds for prohibited discrimination?”
There’s been a battle back and forth over the course of the week. When it was first discovered, the numbers were almost even with “yes” in a slight lead. After being spread through Facebook by myself and a few others, “Yes” was up to almost 74%. Then, in the early morning of the following day, the poll was picked up on by a Montreal Gazette blogger, who (with all good intentions, i’m quite sure) posted it to her MG blog… and now it’s been a battle. There’s nearly 4000 votes thus far, and we are currently losing — but not by much.
Take a moment to click “yes” on the poll. Spread it to others, and have them do the same. For those who aren’t aware of Canadian politics as they currently stand, we have a minority Conservative government (their party has the most seats, but does not hold a majority.) This bill was put forth by an MP from another party, and could very well be shot down simply for political reasons outside of the already “OMG MEN IN OUR WASHROOMS” whargarrble that has been put forth by those in opposition to this.
Every vote counts. Even if we don’t win, every vote matters. Show this MP that trans rights matter in Canada. Vote here:
